The first Algerian winner of the Prix Goncourt, Kamel Daoud now finds himself, along with his compatriot Boualem Sansal, under the scrutiny of Algerian justice. These cases reveal the authoritarian turn affecting Algeria, but also the growing influence of identity-based right-wing movements in France. While condemning these acts of repression, it is essential to question their role as intellectuals — both actors and instruments in the ideological debates of the two countries.
