Among Madurese dramatic genres, the loddrok provides ample opportunities for exploring the question of creativity in performance, being at once traditional and innovative, both at the level of repertory and acting techniques. Drawing on ethnographic research on Madurese performing arts, the author describes the specificity of this popular genre. By analyzing the structure of a single performance, and by taking into account the key role of the scenarist and the importance of improvisation, light can be shed on the processes involved in theatrical creativity
