L’article entend tout d’abord documenter et analyser un phénomène spécifique à l’histoire culturelle de l’Italie de l’après-Seconde Guerre mondiale : concours de beauté et cinéma convergent sur un mode plus significatif, original et pérenne que dans d’autres pays. Ces concours – et en particulier celui de Miss Italie – participent de manière très importante à façonner un nouveau vedettariat cinématographique féminin. Censurés pendant le fascisme, après la guerre, et malgré l’influence du modèle américain, ils construisent une image de la beauté féminine qui puise à la fois dans la tradition culturelle de la Péninsule et dans la nécessité d’un renouvellement de l’image du pays. Dans un second temps, il s’agit de déceler une influence directe de ce système de recrutement sur l’évolution des formes de représentation de la femme dans le cinéma italien lui-même.
The article’s primary objective is to document and analyse a phenomenon that is unique to Italy’s post-World War II cultural history, namely the convergence of beauty contests and cinema in a manner that is more significant, original, and enduring than in other countries. It is evident that these competitions, notably the Miss Italy contest, played a pivotal role in the establishment of a novel female film star system. Censorship during the fascist era, the post-war period, and the influence of the American model all played a role in shaping the concept of female beauty in the region. This concept drew upon the cultural traditions of the peninsula and the broader need to revitalise the country’s image. Secondly, the direct influence of this recruitment system on the evolution of the representation of women in Italian cinema itself will be examined.
